The full build of a new 92m x 38m GP surfaced arena for Carlburg Stables has reached completion.

An original enquiry to refurbish an1.5 furlong existing woodchip trot ring and install an all-weather arena, resulted in a number of site meetings and after much planning, a resulting new full build schooling arena project was planned. The outdoor arena is set to provide a space where the horses can collect and warm up before exercising on the heath.

At the point of completion, the full project included;

  • 92m x 38m GP surfaced arena
  • All weather loop at the top
  • Bespoke gates and fencing
  • Close boarded polo fencing.

Background

Carlburg Stables was built in 1900 by a Charlie Waugh who had named the stables after a place on the borders of Poland & Hungary where he had spent the majority of his youth. Charlie trained successfully at Carlburg until his retirement aged 78 in 1948.

The impressive yard set in the heart of Newmarket has been home to many fantastic trainers over the years including Jo Lawson who trained Never Say Die to victory in the 1954 Derby, this horse was the first of 9 victories in the race for his Jockey a then 19 year old Lester Piggot. Clive Britain was based at the yard from 1975, being resident trainer for the first 3 years he then purchased the yard from Captain Marcos Lemos and trained there for 40 years until his retirement in 2015 at the age of 81. Clive won all the British Classics with the exception of the Derby and rewrote the history books by training the first British trained winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf in 1985 with the wonderful chestnut filly Pebbles.

Roger Varian is a Classic winning racehorse trainer, since claiming Group 1 success in his first season when Nahrain won the Prix de l’Opera in 2011 he has shown excellent consistency amassing over 800 winners and has registered Group 1 victories every season he has trained bar one. Roger purchased Carlburg Stables in 2017.
